Nucleation threshold and deactivation mechanisms of nanoscopic cavitation nuclei

چکیده
The acoustic nucleation threshold for bubbles trapped in cavities has theoretically been predicted within the crevice theory by Atchley and Prosperetti “The crevice model of bubble nucleation,” J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 86, 1065 1989 . Here, we determine this threshold experimentally, by applying a single pressure pulse to bubbles trapped in cylindrical nanoscopic pits “artificial crevices” with radii down to 50 nm. By decreasing the minimum pressure stepwise, we observe the threshold for which the bubbles start to nucleate. The experimental results are quantitatively in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of Atchley and Prosperetti. In addition, we provide the mechanism which explains the deactivation of cavitation nuclei: gas diffusion together with an aspherical bubble collapse. Finally, we present superhydrophobic nuclei which cannot be deactivated, unless with a high-speed liquid jet directed into the pit. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3249602

Evaluation of Sonochemiluminescence in a Phantom in the Presence of Protoporphyrin IX Conjugated to Nanoparticles
Introduction When a liquid is irradiated with high-intensity and low-frequency ultrasound, acoustic cavitation occurs and there are some methods to determine and quantify this phenomenon. The existing methods for performing these experiments include sonochemiluminescence (SCL) and chemical dosimetric methods. The particles in a liquid decrease the ultrasonic intensity threshold needed for cavit...
متن کاملStatistics of acoustically induced bubble-nucleation events in in vitro blood: a feasibility study.
Bubbles can form in biological tissues through ultrasonic activation of natural gas nuclei. The damaging aftereffects raise safety concerns. However, the population of nuclei is currently unknown, and bubble nucleation is stochastic and thus unpredictable. This study investigates the statistical behavior of bubble nucleation experimentally and introduces a model-based analysis to determine the ...
متن کاملCavitation in a metallic liquid: homogeneous nucleation and growth of nanovoids.
Large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to investigate homogeneous nucleation and growth of nanovoids during cavitation in liquid Cu. We characterize in detail the atomistic cavitation processes by following the temporal evolution of cavities or voids, analyze the nucleation behavior with the mean first-passage time (MFPT) and survival probability (SP) methods, and discuss...
متن کاملEffect of Amorphous Silica Addition on Martensitic Phase Transformation of Zirconia and Investigation of its Tetragonal Structure Stability Mechanisms
This work is focused on the effect of amorphous SiO2 addition on the phase transformation and microstructural evolution of ZrO2 particles. Considering the structural similarities between the amorphous ZrO2 and its tetragonal structure, XRD results showed initial nucleation of metastable tetragonal ZrO2 from its amorphous matrix upon heat treatment. This metastable phase is unstable in pure ZrO2...
متن کاملAnatomical regulation of ice nucleation and cavitation helps trees to survive freezing and drought stress
Water in the xylem, the water transport system of plants, is vulnerable to freezing and cavitation, i.e. to phase change from liquid to ice or gaseous phase. The former is a threat in cold and the latter in dry environmental conditions. Here we show that a small xylem conduit diameter, which has previously been shown to be associated with lower cavitation pressure thus making a plant more droug...
